Zone Information for Emergency Services

Zone allocations on the NSW Public Safety Network (PSN) define how different agencies and regions are organized for radio communications. Each agency is assigned specific zones that correspond to geographic areas or operational divisions.

What Are Zones on the PSN?

  • Zones are logical groupings of radio sites and talkgroups that reflect geographic or operational boundaries.
  • They help manage radio traffic, prioritize communications, and ensure coverage for specific areas.
  • Zones are used to assign talkgroups to particular regions, so units operating in those areas can communicate efficiently.

Examples of Zone Allocations by Agency

The PSN supports many NSW agencies, each with tailored zone structures.

Here are some examples:

Fire & Rescue NSW

  • Zones typically align with regional commands (e.g., Metro East, Metro West, Northern, Southern).
  • Each zone includes specific talkgroups for station operations, incident channels, and command.

NSW Ambulance

  • Zones reflect operational sectors such as Sydney Metro, Western NSW, Northern NSW, etc.
  • Includes dispatch talkgroups, clinical coordination, and event channels.

NSW SES

  • Zones are based on regional divisions (e.g., Illawarra South Coast, Hunter, Central West).
  • Each zone includes unit-level talkgroups and incident coordination channels.

NSW Rural Fire Service

  • Zones follow district boundaries (e.g., Shoalhaven, Blue Mountains, Riverina).
  • Includes fireground, command, and logistics talkgroups.

NSW Police Force

  • Uses police area commands (PACs) and regions as zone boundaries.
  • Each zone includes dispatch, tactical, and special operations talkgroups.

Other Agencies

  • Roads & Maritime Services, Corrective Services, and local councils also have zone allocations tailored to their operational footprint.

Why Zone Allocations Matter

Efficient Communication: Ensures units in the same area are on compatible channels.

  • Scalability: Supports large-scale incidents by segmenting traffic.
  • Interoperability: Allows cross-agency coordination within shared zones.
