Transport for NSW (TfNSW)


Role: TfNSW is the lead agency managing all modes of transport in NSW—road, rail, metro, bus, ferry, light rail, point-to-point, and active transport.

Functions:

        • Strategy, planning, policy, and regulation
        • Infrastructure delivery and funding allocation
        • Customer service and network operations
        • Scale: Supports ~8 million residents and 800,000 businesses across NSW

 

Independent Transport Safety and Reliability Regulator (ITSRR)


Status: ITSRR was dissolved in 2010; its functions were absorbed by other agencies.

Original Role:

        • Regulated rail safety under the Rail Safety Act 2002
        • Coordinated safety oversight for rail, bus, and ferry services
        • Reported on reliability and safety performance
        • Legacy: ITSRR helped establish the Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI), which now operates independently to investigate transport incidents
