RMS (TFNSW) Talk Groups

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) was the NSW Government agency responsible for managing roads and waterways until it was dissolved in 2019 and merged into Transport for NSW. Former RMS: What It Did

 

      • Established: 1 November 2011, by merging the Roads & Traffic Authority and NSW Maritime
      • Dissolved: 1 December 2019, functions absorbed by Transport for NSW
      • Headquarters: Milsons Point, Sydney
      • Employees: ~6,900 at its peak
      • Core responsibilities included:
      • Building and maintaining NSW’s road network
      • Managing traffic safety and compliance
      • Overseeing maritime infrastructure and boating safety
      • Administering vehicle registration and driver licensing

 

Transport for NSW: Current Role

 

After RMS was dissolved, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) took over its functions. TfNSW now manages:

 

Roads

      • Planning, building, and maintaining highways, bridges, and local roads
      • Traffic management and safety programs
      • Infrastructure upgrades and congestion reduction

 

Maritime

      • Oversight of NSW waterways, including boating safety and navigation
      • Management of maritime assets like wharves and boat ramps
      • Environmental protection of wetlands and coastal zones

 

Vehicle & Licensing Services

      • Driver testing and licensing
      • Vehicle registration and compliance
      • Road user education and enforcement
