What the Department Does

 

As of 1 July 2024, DPI became DPIRD, expanding its focus to include regional development alongside its traditional primary industries mandate.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

        • Agriculture & Biosecurity: Research, regulation, and emergency response for crops, livestock, pests, and diseases.
        • Fisheries & Aquaculture: Sustainable management of marine and freshwater resources.
        • Forestry: Oversight of native and plantation forestry operations.
        • Food Safety & Animal Welfare: Standards enforcement and education.
        • Hunting Regulation: Licensing and compliance for recreational hunting.
        • Natural Disaster Recovery: Support for communities and industries affected by floods, fires, and droughts.
        • Export & Market Access: Enhancing NSW’s global trade in agricultural products.

 

Regional Development Role

 

        • DPIRD also leads initiatives to:
        • Drive regional investment
        • Deliver infrastructure and grant programs
        • Support local land services and resource management
        • Build resilient rural economies

More than 75% of staff live and work in regional NSW, ensuring local knowledge and community engagement.

 

Economic Impact

 

        • In 2021–22, NSW primary industries reached a record $23.1 billion in gross value of production (GVP)—a 23% year-on-year increase.
        • Key sectors include horticulture, wine grapes, forestry, and fisheries.

DPIRD operates research stations and collaborates with universities and industry to:

        • Develop drought-resistant crops
        • Improve livestock genetics
        • Advance aquaculture technologies
        • Monitor biosecurity threats
