Talkgroups & Identifiers

VRA Rescue NSW operations span state, regional, tactical, and dispatch channels on the PSN:

  • Operations Channels: Frequently catalogued ranges include 20083–20087 (Operations 1–5).
  • State/Tactical Channels: Ranges such as 30096–30100 utilized for state-wide operations, coordination, and dispatch.

Radio ID Usage & Interoperability

VRA units typically employ Radio IDs (RIDs) aligned with NSW Rural Fire Service unit numbering conventions. Operating on shared PSN talkgroups enables seamless multi-agency interoperability with Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, NSW SES, and the State Rescue Board during complex rescue operations and multi-agency exercises.

Coverage & Activity Patterns

Traffic is strictly event-driven across VRA's network of over 50 local rescue squads—spiking during road crash rescue responses, search operations, and scheduled training exercises. Monitoring is most productive during active emergency incidents or severe weather events.

Monitoring Tips & Configuration

  • Regional Site Coverage: Program control channels and regional site talkgroups for areas where local squads operate (expect channels to remain quiet until an incident or drill activates them).
  • State-Wide Patching: Watch for both local and state-wide operations talkgroups, as large incidents frequently trigger statewide patches.
  • Database Verification: Regularly check updated community scan resources and P25 trunking databases for newly assigned VRA dispatch and tactical TGIDs before programming your scanner.
