Marine Rescue NSW Information

Marine Rescue NSW on the NSW PSN

Marine Rescue NSW (MRNSW) is a volunteer-based emergency service responsible for marine search and rescue, vessel tracking, and radio watch across NSW waters. They transitioned to the NSW PSN (formerly GRN) to improve interoperability and coverage.

Talkgroup IDs (TGIDs) & Identifiers

Marine Rescue NSW uses a series of dedicated talkgroups on the PSN, typically assigned across regional sectors:

  • TGID Range: TGIDs 12526 to 12545+ are assigned to various regional units (such as Hunter Central Coast, Greater Sydney, Illawarra, and Monaro sectors).
  • Radio IDs (RIDs): Associated unit radios typically utilize ID ranges such as 2449xxx and 2577xxx.

Specific aliases correspond to regional base operations, tactical coordination channels, and designated training groups.

Coverage and Sites

  • State-Wide Reach: Marine Rescue NSW benefits from the PSN’s extensive coverage, including coastal RFSS repeater sites.
  • Reliability: This ensures robust communication for rescue coordination, particularly in remote coastal or offshore environments.

Operational Use

MRNSW uses the PSN primarily for:

  • Incident coordination (e.g., MAYDAY, PAN-PAN responses)
  • Inter-agency communication with NSW Police Marine Area Command, Maritime authorities, and other emergency services
  • Routine vessel tracking and safety operations

Complementary Marine Radio Services

  • Public Frequencies: In addition to the PSN, MRNSW maintains continuous VHF, HF, and 27 MHz marine radio services for public distress monitoring and vessel log-ons.
  • Operator Standards: Standard operating procedures require certified marine radio operators for public-facing coastal network coordination.
